Overview
-
A range of three new flavours for the Sourz brand, inspired by three contrasting biomes and their native tribes and flora. Features of this range include; a new bottle shape, logo and packaging.
Brief
-
Create a range that moves the brand away from the neon buzz of city nights, and transports
the consumer to a new and unexpected place. Taking inspiration from the world’s most remote
and isolated places like rainforests, deserts, arctic wastes.
Concept
-
Select three contrasting biomes and use their native tribes and flora, to inspire ideas for a range of three flavours, including ingredients and visual identity.
Bottle Shape
-
As the flavours and visual identity of each member of the range, was inspired by tribes of people, I decided that the bottle shape for the range should reference the human body. The bottle has a defined neck and waist, as well as hips and shoulders because of this. Scrapped ideas included conventional bottle shapes, as well as Mayan architecture and Haida totem poles.
Flavours
-
The range of three unique new flavours for the brand inspired by the diet of three tribes of indigineous americans; the Mayan tribes of central america, the the Pueblo tribes of the american mid-west and the Haida inuits of the american north-west. I named the range Esoterica, referencing the fact that most people don’t know much about these tribes.
Six-Bottle box
-
A necessity for any range of spirits is the six-bottle box. The product needs to be easily distributed to bars and supermarkets and this allows that. This prototype for the Mayan inspired flavour, showcases the pattern found on the lower label of the bottle. The patterns used on all three bottles in this position, are all based on the same small grid system and are thus easily interchangable.
Typography
-
As native american tribes did not have an alphabet, or any written language of note. I decided to use Inline typography to help imply a Native American theme, as often done by designers. For Esoterica, the name of the range, I used Urban Disco, an ornate, inline typeface with sans serif framework. For the Crafted in America Mantra, I used the cleaner Neutraface Inline by House Industries. I then remade the Sourz logo, using the Neutraface type family so it was uniform with the rest of the project. The flavour of each member of the range was set in Wisdom Script by Lost Type.
